Budapest Transportation

Traffic in Budapest is quite diverse. Using a car is adventurous and guarantees long sightseeing, which is only good if sitting in a traffic jam is what you want to spend your time doing. Use your car only if you know the city well! Otherwise take a bus or a tram to get around.

By Boat
A new, summer service of the Budapest Transportation Ltd. is that boats (water buses) operate from Boráros tér to Rómaifürdo several times a day, making the usual trip to work fun by cruising along the river. An excellent sightseeing and travel opportunity for tourists, as well, and on the top of all it just slightly costs more than a bus ride, and definitely gives more pleasure.

Subway
Public transportation in Budapest is quite efficient. Modern, fast subway system connects distant districts of the city, and the three lines take you anywhere you would like to go. This is the best way to get around in Budapest, though it doesn't offer the view buses or trolleys do.

Buses
A consistent bus network works in Budapest, the blue buses on the local routes reach every point of the city.

Trams
Budapest operates a great number of trams throughout the city. During the years trams became part of the city's sight, and there are some famous lines that everyone knows, such as nr 4-6 along the great ring road or nr 47 along Liberty Bridge over the Danube or nr 2 along the river in Pest. These yellow vehicles make a special atmosphere in the city with their unique tinkling. Trams are fast and reliable, and by using them travelers have the advantage of a special way of sightseeing.

Trolleys
Most streets, especially in the city center, are cabled which allows trolleys to work their way through the streets without interference from cars. It is truly an adventure to travel by any of these red trolleys, due to their routes, their special operation system and the drivers' singulare driving style. Trolleys are reliable and rarely break down. Thanks to the ‘bus-lines' on each road, trolleys, just like normal buses are fairly fast and rarely get stuck in traffic jams.

Train
There is a local (green) rail system (HÉV), which connects the city with some of its suburban areas and nearby villages or towns. Conditions of traveling are the same as on other public transport vehicles. Don't forget to buy an accessory ticket (besides the normal one) if you take the train to somewhere outside of the city boundaries.

Ticket information
Pre-validated tickets are necessary for traveling, because though running into a ticket control is not too common, controllers strictly fine everyone traveling without a valid ticket. Tickets are available at each counter at the subway stations, at the news stands, at occasional ticket sellers and from machines. They are available in packages of 10 and 20 as well. Tickets and all kind of passes are valid for all public transport vehicles within the boundaries of the city.

Specialties
There are some unique forms of transportation as well, that can't be found together in any other cities – the funicular, a little cable car up to the Castle, the children's railway and the chairlift, which reaches the city's highest point, János Hill. These are useful and really enjoyable forms of discovering the city and its surroundings!

Pleasure and sightseeing boats take tourists along the river, from Boráros tér to Római fürdo (Roman Bath).

Taxi
Taxis have yellow number plates and yellow ‘taxi' signs on them. It is worth to call a car by phone, as it costs less than the ones waiting on the streets. There are many taxi companies operating in Budapest. Switchboard operators usually speak English.
